Is Time To Replace Your Registers?
Is it time to replace the air registers on your walls? It might seem like a small and trivial job, but replacing air registers can have a number of benefits. This article explains why you should replace your air registers, and what you should look for when shopping.
Why You Might Need to Registers
Most people choose to replace their registers when the old one simply become too difficult to operate. This is usually a problem that you have with metal registers. Registers can get rusty, making it hard to open and close the blades. This is particularly true if your HVAC system is not working properly. If the evaporator components in your HVAC system are not removing all of the moisture from the air, then your metal register is a more likely to become rusty. Often, you can't see all of this rust unless you try to look at the inside of the registers when they're open using a flashlight.
Some people paint over their registers, which can clog the hinges and make them difficult to operate. Painting registers is never good idea because the temperature can heat up and cool down rather quickly, causing the paint to separate from the metal and peel off.
Many people also replace the air registers because they have repainted or change the color of the trim around the windows and baseboards. When you do this, you usually want the registers to be the same color. Most registers are white, but you can find paintable products, and products they come in popular neutral tones. So, if you did change your trim color, changing the registers is also smart.
Choose Vinyl Registers
If you are going to replace your registers, you should consider investing in vinyl. Vinyl registers are extremely functional, but also affordable and low maintenance. With vinyl, you don't need to worry about rust. So, they should remain easy to operate, as long as they are kept clean and dust does not build up within the hinges. Also, vinyl is easier to paint than aluminum. That being said, you should try to avoid painting hinges. If you do it, you need to use a spray gun or spray paint. You don't want to use traditional wall paint. It is too thick and it won't stick well to a smooth vinyl surface.
